I decided to expand a little bit on the "About Me" section from the home page. I've always had an interest in photography growing up, but never really had the desire to take it up as a hobby. In my last year in college, while majoring in chemistry and classical music composition, I finally had the opportunity to add an elective to my schedule and thought why not give it a shot. Little did I know that one semester would spark into a new hobby. It was one of my favorite classes. The professor was an photographer from New York City who came out each week to teach the class. He really made it interesting and I loved all of the aspects from shooting, to developing, and making prints. Upon graduating though I found my hobby hard to keep up. I was shooting with my father's Nikon FG, a Speedlight SB-16, and slew of Ilford HP-5 film. The problem...no way to easily develop my film. Living in an apartment didn't lend itself well to putting in dark room and storing developing chemicals. And, while living near Boston, I did have the ability to rent lab space at MassArt or NESOP, the timing of taking the subway into Boston to spend hours and days processing film really didn't fit into my schedule. Working as an analytical chemist for a small biotech, and trying to keep up with my music writing, I really didn't have a lot of time to dedicate to photography, but I found myself missing it. Finally in late 2009, I decided to put the FG and rolls of film away and bought myself a Nikon D90. I really loved shooting film, but the digital SLR totally changed my access to taking photos and really got me back into my hobby.
So what do I like to shoot? Well, a lot of different subjects. For the most part macros and nature...but it's actually hard to answer it as simply as that. I enjoy shooting most subjects and really like trying out new techniques. One thing I really have not enjoyed is portraits, or people as a primary subject. I have never been able to put my finger on why, but I am working on it. I do know that I really like photography and the technology and history of the gear that lets me capture images. Also, as a scientist, I really like researching and experimenting with photography gear. This blog is an output of my research, not only to capture it for myself but to share it for whoever is interested. Hope you enjoy!
